ADMINISTRATION.
A LARGE NUMBER OF PERSONS of the district are
engaged in several branches of public administration. These include
persons working as police and village watchmen, in offices of
Government, in municipalities and other local bodies, as village
officials and servants.
The 1881 census records a total number of 14,592
persons under the head "Persons engaged in the General and Local
Government of the country". This head is divided into three
sub-heads, which with the number engaged in each are shown below:-

The Census report, however notes that the figures
against (1) and (2) might include a large number of village
officials who were not full-time servants of Government and whose
main occupation was agriculture.
