KANERI
Kaneri (Karvir T.; 16° 35' N; 73° 25' E; p.
2,395), lies nine miles south of Kolhapur. The village is known for
its Lingayat monastery or math in a hamlet on a neighbouring
hill. The monastery which is called Kadapaca Math, belongs to a
Lingayat Swami or ascetic and is surrounded by a stone wall. In the
middle of the monastery is a temple of Sidhesvar, 20' x 20' x 30',
high. Round the temple of Sidhesvar are small shrines dedicated to
Adkesvar, Cakresvar, and Rudrapad with the sacred bull in front. The
monastery has a total yearly income of Rs. 1,300. The head of the
monastery has great influence and has between 5,000 and 6,000
Lingayat disciples spread over Kolhapur, the Konkan, Bombay, Mysore
and Madras.
